Abstract

Marie Therese Giudici-Orticoni

Microbiology is a study of microscopic organisms, such as bacteria, viruses, archaea, fungi and protozoa. This field includes basic research on biochemistry, anatomy, cell biology, ecology, evolution and medical aspects of microorganisms, including host reaction to these agents. The nature of microorganisms has been speculated for many years before their actual discovery. The presence of unseen microbiological life was postulated by Jainism, based on the teachings of Mahavira as early as the 6th century BC. The Roman Marcus Terentius Varro refers to microbes when he warned against locating a home in the vicinity of swamps' because there are bred some tiny creatures that cannot be seen by the eyes, which float in the air and enter the body through the mouth and nose, causing serious diseases.
