The basic substances that our bodies need to grow and function normally are vitamins and minerals. A, C, D, E, and K are recognized vitamins, and B vitamins include: thiamin (B1), riboflavin (B2), niacin (B3), pantothenic acid (B5), pyridoxal (B6), cobalamin (B12), biotin, and folate/folic acid. For health, a variety of minerals are essential: calcium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, chloride, magnesium, selenium. 'Vitamin means' essential to life. Compounds necessary for the proper functioning of our bodies are vitamins and minerals. To help us develop, to see correctly, to shape bones, muscles, skin and organs, as well as to help us combat infections, we need vitamins and minerals. Deficiencies in some minerals and vitamins can lead to serious issues. Providing a wide range of fresh foods from the five food groups, including whole grain bread and cereals, vegetables, fruit, meat, fish, poultry, eggs, nuts and legumes, and dairy products such as milk, cheese and yoghurt, is the best way to ensure your child receives enough vitamins and minerals for balanced growth and development.
